. Development Release (DR) 0.14 in DOX format for Enlightenment's DOX document
. viewer. Please see http://www.enlightenment.org/ for more up-to-date

. been made to make it as stable and bug-free as possible, but as with all
. projects heavily in development there can be mistakes and bugs.

. How to use the Default setup in Enlightenment.
text e 17 0 0 5 45 502 51
. The default setup in Enlightenment is intended to provide a good
. looking, powerful and accessible interface to your desktop. It contains as
. many of the configurable and modifiable options in Enlightenment that can be
. reasonably fit onto your display.
image 5 120 epix/btn_sound_normal.png epix/btn_sound_hilited.png epix/btn_sound_clicked.png -1
text e 17 0 0 55 110 452 51
. The button shown here on the left on your display will toggle
. Enlightenment's audio on and off every time it is clicked. If EsounD was
. not installed when Enlightenment was compiled, it will have no effect.
image 5 220 epix/btn_focus_normal.png epix/btn_focus_hilited.png epix/btn_focus_clicked.png -1
text e 17 0 0 55 175 452 119
. The button on the left will toggle the pointer focus mode between
. PointerFocus, SloppyFocus and ClickToFocus each time the button is clicked.
. PointerFocus is where the keyboard presses go to the application window the
. mouse is currently over. If the mouse is not over a window the key presses
. disappear. SloppyFocus is the same as PointerFocus, except the focus will
. remain on the last window it was on if the mouse does not explicitly move
. over another window. ClickToFocus requires you to click on the window with
. the mouse to explicitly set the keyboard focus.

. This button will toggle the move mode between being opaque and
. outlined each time the button is clicked. Opaque looks slicker but requires
. many more system resources. On small / slow systems you may wish not use
. opaque move.

text e 17 0 0 55 90 452 34

. considerably faster and for slow systems is definitely recommended.

text e 17 0 0 55 135 452 68
. Clicking on this button will toggle if windows slide onto the display
. when they first appear. This may be nice but like opaque move can be slow
. and consume resources on slow machines. It is recommended you turn this off
. or use a non-opaque slidemode.
image 5 230 epix/btn_deskslide_normal.png epix/btn_deskslide_hilited.png epix/btn_deskslide_clicked.png -1
text e 17 0 0 55 210 452 68
. This button will toggle if desktops slide onto screen when you change
. to a new desktop. This, like opaque move is very resource consuming and
. requires a fast machine and very good graphics subsystem to operate well.
. Turning it off will give smooth desktop flipping.

. This button toggles deskray mode on and off when clicked. Deskray
. mode is rather complex and useful for when you need to access the dragbar of
. a desktop when that dragbar is not visible (ie obscured behind other
. desktops). Enlightenment places a "Tab" (a bar with stripes) where the
. dragbar would normally be. You can then drag that desktop by dragging that
. Tab around.
text e 17 0 0 5 210 502 119
. Enlightenment provides a means to control virtual desktops in a way
. that is not too dissimilar to the Amiga's Screens. At the top of the DEFAULT
. theme you will find a big horizontal bar with arrow buttons on either end
. pointing up and down. If you click and drag the bar with the mouse the
. desktop will be dragged along allowing you to see desktops underneath it.
. The only exception is the root desktop (or desktop 0) - this desktop can
. only be raised. Lowering and dragging don't work. The up arrow raises the
. desktop to the top of the stack and the down arrow lowers it to the bottom
. (below the root desktop even).

. The above is a reasonably comprehensive set of keys to make using your

. simply using the config editor or editing the user_main.cfg by hand after
. copying it from the enlightenment/config directory to the users
. ~/.enlightenment/ directory.

. How to use Themes in Enlightenment
text e 17 0 0 5 45 502 136
. Enlightenment is capable of switching its entire look to a completely
. different one via the use of Themes. This allows a user, group or company
. to produces GUI setups that follow a certain "Theme", immersing the user in
. a completely new and wondrous environment when they use the new theme. This
. is a mere command line option away with enlightenment. To run Enlightenment
. and have it use a theme other than the default setup, find the theme you
. acquired and in your .xsession, .xinitrc or .Xclients file in your home
. directory, change the command line that runs Enlightenment to be something
. like:
text e 17 512 0 5 185 502 17
. /usr/local/enlightenment/bin/enlightenment -theme name_of_theme
text e 17 0 0 5 205 502 170
. The /usr/local/ may be /usr/ or /opt/ or some other path on your system
. depending on where you installed Enlightenment. The name_of_theme is
. in fact a full path to where the theme is stored. Eg:
. /usr/local/enlightenment/themes/flowery-pink or ~/themes/industrial-steel
. depending on where the theme is. The theme is looks for there first. If it
. is not found Enlightenment will look in ~/.enlightenment/themes/ for it. If
. it is not there, /usr/local/enlightenment/themes, and if not there it will
. finally give up. A theme is either a directory containing the theme files
. (/usr/local/enlightenment/config is effectively an unpacked theme), or a TAR
. or TAR.GZ ball that contains all the data that would normally be in such a
. theme directory.

. Things Left To Do in Enlightenment

. You may notice that there are many things missing in this release. No
. it's not a bug. it's simply features that haven't' been coded yet. The
. obvious missing features that WILL be put in in future releases are:
text e 17 0 0 5 100 502 119
. Menus, Iconification, Shading, Desktop Pagers, Strips, Stripjoints,
. Tooltips, Background Browser, Auto button-bar and menu generation from
. GNOME desktop entries, Multi-head support, Keybinding displayer and Editor,
. State-sensitive buttons, internal timer system, Large chunks of the IPC
. interface (including external imageclasses for buttons, external
. soundclasses, external background classes, remote IPC control etc.), More
. extensive GNOME hint support, Startup images / animations, Decent
. messagebox, Imageclass layering, Window groups, Dynamic border changing,
. file browser (with thumbnail support etc.) and Autoraise.

. Other options may be considered at some point but there is a big list
. of things to do and this will take a long time since we can only work on this
. in our spare time. Be patient and features will arrive as time moves on.
. The other option is to actively take part in development and help us move
. along more quickly.

. We would like to thank all the people on #E on IRC on Efnet for their
. support and help, and also all the people on the e-develop mailing list. We
. also extend our warm thanks to 2Rad Technologies (http://www.2rad.net) for
. kindly providing space for a webserver and bandwidth for a website, and
. Intellimedia Commerce (http://www.intellimedia.com) for providing bandwidth
. and office space for an FTP site. We want to thank Linus Torvalds for
. starting work on a UNIX Kernel and making it available for all to use on
. standard cheap PC hardware. Also thanks goes to the entire Kernel
. development team. We wish to also thank MIT for having created X-Windows
. and the X-Consortium for keeping it going. Also Xi Graphics
. (http://www.xig.com) get our gratitude for allowing us to use their
. X-servers to help debug Enlightenment.
