====== Repositories ======

A **repository** is a collection of pages that are linked to each other. Typically all pages within a repository belong to the some project; although it is also very common to have a "dump" or "scratch" repository were all odds and ends end up.

**If you run zim for the first time** you get the "Open repository" dialog asking you to select a repository. Assuming you don't have any content yet you should start with adding an empty (or non-existent) directory as a repository. When you select this new repository and open it, all pages you create in zim will be placed within that directory.

You can have multiple repositories, for example for separate projects. Or you can have a single repository for all your stuff. In general when you have separate groups of pages that do not interlink it is best to put these groups in separate repositories. That way **zim** remembers the state and history of each of these groups independent of the others.

When working with several repositories you can get to the "Open repository" dialog from **zim** using the "//File//->//Open//" menu item.
